The disappearance of the COO role is a trend we have definitely noticed over the past few years.
Today the Wall Street Journal reported on a new and related trend: are CEOs replacing COOs with Chief Information Officers?
The Journal reports:
Technology is the driving force of the enterprise, and CEOs are realizing how imperative it is to have an executive at the helm of the organization who is steeped in technology in addition to being well versed in the business. As evidence, we’re seeing a new trend of CEOs replacing their COOs with former CIOs. But it’s not the title that will determine whether technology is a source of innovation or consternation. What’s important is that the CIO breaks out of the back office and builds relationships with the C-Suite as well as business unit leaders.
This is a trend we will continue to watch.
